In May 2020, John Fry, a Virginia-based tax consultant, was charged with four counts of unlawful inspection and disclosure of tax returns or return information, after he was accused of leaking confidential tax returns for wealthy Americans, including President Donald Trump. According to federal prosecutors, Fry obtained the confidential documents from a database maintained by the Internal Revenue Service and provided them to a news organization, which then reported on them. Fry allegedly breached his fiduciary responsibility to his clients and misused his position at the firm where he worked to access the records unlawfully. He faces a maximum potential sentence of 24 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
