MGM Resorts International disclosed Tuesday that it spent around $100 million to investigate and remediate a data breach that exposed the sensitive information of 10.6 million customers and compromised a database of credit card payment data for some of its former and current customers.
The company said the cyberattack affected customers who made hotel, entertainment, gaming and food and beverage purchases between March and October 2018.
The company said the exact amount it spent on the breach is still unclear and the investigation is ongoing. It added that the costs would be non-cash expenses.
“MGM Resorts will continue to invest in data protection and actively monitor its systems and networks for suspicious activity,” the company said in a statement.
MGM Resorts said the breach was detected in July 2019 and an examination of the incident showed that the unauthorized person “did not have ongoing access to the consumer and payment information related to the incident.” It added that the investigation is ongoing but it does not expect to find further exposure of sensitive data.
