When travelers in the 1880s began riding over bluffs, through shale-edged canyons and across the green valley of the St. Croix River to the then small north woods village of Danbury in Burnett County, they found that even then Danbury was an eager host to fishermen, hunters and sports among the green, shaded hills of northwestern Wisconsin.
During later years, when tourists from Milwaukee, Minneapolis and other nearby cities would arrive, locals would joke that “the Swedes, Finns and Norwegians exchanged the rural life of the old world for the rural life in Wisconsin.”
It’s still true today. Danbury is more of a small village than a tourist destination. But visitors come here for the peace and quiet, the spectacular views of its’ river valley, the opportunity to shop and explore the village, and to experience some old-fashioned hospitality.
For a fun nature experience, drive 10 miles north on County Road F to the unique sandstone cliffs 60-90 feet high of the St. Croix Escarpment State Natural Area. Kids love to climb and explore this otherworldly place.
At night, enjoy some of the best stargazing in the Midwest. Alternatively, one can take in ATV trails and camp in the nameKagon Barrens State Natural Area that is two miles south of Danbury. Nine miles east is the largest state park in the upper Midwest, Crex Meadows Wildlife Area
The small villages of Danbury host several multi-genre music festivals throughout the summer. Again this year the town’s popular Country Fest takes place the fourth Saturday in July. Danbury hosts one of the oldest and most popular rodeos in the area in August.
In October, Danbury celebrates the fall colors with aan annual Apple Fest with local crafts, music and other activities.
For visiting hikers, boaters, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers and sailors, Danbury offers several ways for visitors to stay awhile. Hotels, repair, bait, laundry, and other services for boaters are available and for campers, there are a variety of campgrounds and RV parks located nearby.

The Burnett County Historical Museum gives visitors the opportunity to step back in time to the days of the lumberjacks and fur traders. Near the museum is the historic boat landing known as the Pow wow Point landing, established in 1917.
The village also boasts two art galleries and the Danbury Public Library with free wireless access. For shopping, there are several antique and vintage stores, a woodworking shop, a bakery and boutique.
The Burnett Dairy of Danbury, established in 1895, processes and distributes more than 6 million pounds of cheese annually. Visitors here can also enjoy a drive-in movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, beach, and a brand-new state of the art multi-purpose recreation facility known as The Dome.
