President Donald Trump’s ongoing attacks on immigration — from the travel ban to reductions in refugee admissions — have sparked fresh alarm among advocates and experts heading into 2024. Trump implemented an unprecedented array of restrictions aimed at cutting legal and illegal immigration, including the widely contested travel ban, ramped-up deportations, extended wait times for green cards and reduced refugee admissions to historic lows. The administration also sought to end asylum and fundamentally reshape the immigration system through a slew of executive actions and policy announcements.
As a result, experts and advocates fear the long-term damage Trump has inflicted on the immigration system, particularly since the very core of the system is designed to provide a pathway to citizenship for many immigrants who otherwise wouldn’t have it. Some of Trump’s changes, like the “public charge” rule, which broadly barred immigrants from obtaining green cards if they had used public benefits, have already been shut down by the courts. But others, like the travel ban, remain in effect, and a few others, such as increased fees for certain visas, have become permanent.
Going forward, the biggest fear is that Trump’s anti-immigrant legacy will continue to shape immigration policy in the coming years. Advocates anticipate that the Biden Administration will have to work hard to counteract Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and policies and undo the damage Trump inflicted on both the system and the image of the United States abroad. They hope that the next four years will bring much-needed reforms to the immigration system and restore the nation’s reputation as a beacon of hope for people from around the world.
