The race for the Republican majority leader in the Ohio House of Representatives will begin anew after Representative Larry Householder was ousted from his post. Householder, who had previously served as speaker of the House, was removed from office following federal accusations of racketeering and other charges in connection with an alleged bribery scheme.
The race for his replacement will start immediately and is likely to feature Representatives Jim Butler, Mark Fraizer, and Ryan Smith. Butler served as House Majority Leader prior to Householder’s ouster, and is expected to be the odds-on favorite to take over the role. Fraizer is a former state representative from Pickaway County, and Smith is the current Speaker Pro Tempore.
The winner of the race will need the support of a majority of the House’s 99 members in order to be chosen as speaker. The new speaker will play an important role in shaping the state’s policy agenda in the 2021 session, when Ohioans will elect a new governor and vote on state ballot initiatives.
