In a rare move, Ford Motor Company Executive Chair Bill Ford called on the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to make a deal and end the “acrimonious” contract talks that have been ongoing since July.
In an open letter to UAW President Rory Gamble, Ford said it was time to “talk turkey” and reach an agreement that can be ratified as soon as possible. Ford pointed out that the sides have been negotiating for more than four months, and the risk of a strike is growing.
“It is time to make a deal. I urge you to negotiate an agreement with the Company that is fair, equitable and takes into account the interests of all the stakeholders — the UAW members who work in our plants, the communities we operate in, and the Ford Motor Company itself,” Ford wrote.
He also cautioned that “all of us can lose if the negotiations drag on for too long or if mistakes are made.” None of us want to find ourselves in “a acrimonious and costly labor dispute.”
Ford’s letter is a significant move in the contract negotiations, as it indicates that the company is serious about reaching an agreement. It also shows that neither side is willing to back down, and a strike still remains likely if no agreement is reached.
Ford’s plea to both sides shows the importance for a swift and equitable resolution to the contract dispute. It is clear that Ford wants the negotiations to end without either side suffering too much damage, financially or overall.
Ford is one of the major automakers in the U.S., so the negotiations between it and the UAW have implications for the entire auto industry. It is clear that both sides need to make concessions and come to an agreement—particularly one that takes into account the needs of all stakeholders—if a strike is to be avoided.
