On January 3, 2020, the U.S. Department of State ordered the departure of U.S. government personnel from Iraq who do not have critical duties or essential needs. The embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Erbil, Iraq, will continue to operate with reduced staff.
The State Department approved the voluntary departure, citing continuing threats from Iranian-backed militias in the region. U.S. citizens were advised to arrange for their departure from Iraq and remain highly vigilant. The State Department also issued a Level 4 travel advisory urging travelers not to visit Iraq. This travel advisory is the highest issued by the State Department and indicates “Do Not Travel” advisories.
