The current chaos surrounding the Speaker of the House race could ultimately benefit the Democrats as the race stretches out into a new week. The delay in selecting a Speaker has allowed the Democrats more time to negotiate on a number of key issues, including immigration and health care. It has also allowed more time for Democrats to come up with an attractive enough candidate that can attract enough Republican votes for the Speaker position. The time gained could also be an opportunity for Democrats to build more support within their own party, as they have more time to address issues of party unity and make sure their members are on the same page. This could help them coalesce behind a single candidate and secure the much needed 218 votes to elect a Speaker. The longer this situation continues however, the more of a political advantage the Democrats may gain in the process.
