In February 2020, the New York-based law firm Sidley Austin LLP rescinded job offers to seven Harvard Law School students who had signed a letter criticizing the university for its ties with Israeli law schools. The letter, which was signed by hundreds of Harvard law students in November 2019, accused the school of providing “unwavering support for and deep investment in” institutions that “directly harm” Palestinian rights. Sidley Austin LLP had recently merged with a law firm based in Tel Aviv and was thought to be concerned about its public image. In response to the news, Harvard Law School Dean John Manning said he was “profoundly disappointed and concerned” by the decision. He added that any decisions to withdraw offers of employment should be made based on “candidate merit and experience” and not political views.
