Prosecutors in the ongoing trial of Sam Bankman-Fried have drawn comparisons between the defense argument and the classic movie “Dumb and Dumber.”
During their final arguments, prosecutors highlighted a number of actions they claim Bankman-Fried took to evade taxes, including engaging in a complicated offshore shell game involving multiple entities and transactions.
In response, the defense attempted to make the argument that Bankman-Fried’s actions were simply a legitimate attempt to take advantage of loopholes in the tax law. Prosecutors rejected this argument, citing the famous movie line in which protagonists Lloyd and Harry famously ask each other, “So you’re saying there’s a chance.”
Prosecutors argued that Bankman-Fried’s actions should not be considered a legitimate attempt to minimize tax liability, but rather an elaborate attempt to defraud the U.S. government. They characterized the defense’s argument as “Dumb and Dumber” logic, claiming that Bankman-Fried’s actions had no chance of succeeding and, even if they had, would have been illegal.
