after election
During the election, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made an effort to appeal to moderate Republicans, independent voters, and traditional Trump supporters, hoping to form a broad coalition to help him win the competitive race. However, his efforts backfired as people from each of these groups ultimately abandoned his candidacy in droves and contributed to the election of his opponent, former Democratic Party Chairman Andrew Gillum.
DeSantis’s moderate Republican base were perhaps the most significant defectors from the governor’s coalition. After jumping on the Trump bandwagon in Florida’s Republican primary, DeSantis had to then appeal to moderate Republicans, independents, and even some Democrats, which he achieved with his combination of answer pivoting and downplaying Trump’s role in his campaign during the general election. However, this ultimately proved to be insufficient, as many of these same moderates ended up voting for Gillum instead.
Additionally, DeSantis also failed to retain a strong MAGA base, as the president’s approval rating plummeted in the weeks leading up to the election. Trump’s divisive rhetoric, policy stances, and apparent alliance with DeSantis ultimately hurt the Governor’s standing with many of his traditional supporters, who shifted their votes to Gillum at the last minute due to dissatisfaction with the Trump administration and DeSantis’s loyalty to it.
Overall, DeSantis’s efforts to build a broad coalition prior to the election ultimately failed as voters across the various political spectrums—moderates, independent voters, and MAGA supporters—rejected his campaign.
