Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter, is facing off with a U.S. senator after the company pledged to stop charging consumers hidden fees on ticket sales.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) wrote a letter to Live Nation chairman and CEO Michael Rapino after the company’s promise to reduce ticket fees. Blumenthal asked Live Nation if it was committed to the pledge, or if it would be implementing “any new policies or practices” to keep it.
The senator also expressed concern that fees charged by the company would come back in a different form. Blumenthal wrote that it “would be quite simple” for the company to include additional fees in the listed ticket prices, a practice that is already commonplace in the live entertainment industry.
In response, Live Nation denied any wrongdoing and said that it “consistently works to bring the most affordable ticket prices for events to consumers.” The company wrote that it “strives to be transparent and fair in all ticketing charges,” and called its fees “standard industry practice.”
Blumenthal has vowed to continue his inquiry into the company’s fee structure, saying that it was a “profoundly meaningful cost” to audiences. He demanded that Live Nation provide more clarity on how it determines its fees, and if it would be making any changes to them in the future.
