In a recent tweet, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) criticized the United States’ foreign policy approach to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that it “doesn’t add up.”
In the tweet, Omar referred to a story from the Israeli news outlet Ynet that reported US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President Donald Trump had refused to criticize Israel’s recent raids in the occupied West Bank, instead defending Netanyahu’s actions as necessary for the country’s security.
“This doesn’t add up,” Omar wrote in her tweet. “The US must not be a party to Occupation and human rights abuses. Foreign policy must be consistent and principled.”
Omar’s comments echo the sentiments expressed by many critics of Netanyahu, who have long accused him of using his government’s actions to promote an agenda of occupation and oppression. The US approach to Netanyahu has also been a subject of criticism for its perceived double standards when compared to its approach to other countries, such as Iran and Venezuela.
