On October 15, 2020, the United States and the United Kingdom announced fresh sanctions against Hamas, a militant group controlling the Gaza Strip, in order to disrupt its support networks. The sanctions target anyone transferring funds from Iran to Hamas and seeks to sever the group’s ties with Iranian banks that allow the financial transfers. It also maintains steps by the US Treasury and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office to blacklist those facilitating transfers or providing assistance to Hamas. The sanctions come amid heightened tensions in the region associated with Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain’s normalizing of diplomatic relations.
