On February 14, 2021, Democratic Representative Anna Eshoo announced she will not seek reelection in 2022. The California representative has held office in Congress for 30 years, representing California’s 18th district.
In her statement released on Twitter, Eshoo said that after giving her decision “great thought and consideration,” she decided that it was the right time to step aside and make way for the next generation of leaders. She added that “the values I hold and laws I’ve championed will be the foundation of my legacy.”
Eshoo has been a champion for issues concerning technology, healthcare and equality. She is the first chairwoman of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, and was heavily involved in the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.
Eshoo’s announcement is a big milestone for the Democratic Party. She is the eighth House Democrat to announce they will not be seeking reelection in 2022 and the second from California’s delegation, the other being Representative Zoe Lofgren. Her departure has caused concerns amongst Democrats that Republicans could take control of the House in 2022 due to the number of open seats.
