The wife of a North Carolina Republican official has been convicted of participating in a months-long voter-fraud scheme in 2020.
Stephanie Ann Lyden, the wife of N.C. GOP Executive Director Phillip Lyden, was convicted by a North Carolina jury on charges of obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and two counts of solicitation to commit voter fraud.
Stephanie Ann Lyden admitted to helping her husband and others illegally fill out and submit more than 100 absentee ballot applications of North Carolina residents without their knowledge or permission. According to prosecutors, she even provided false information on the applications, including false names and false addresses on some of the forms.
In addition, she was also charged with aiding and abetting her husband in helping to cast three ineligible absentee ballots.
The charges were a result of a multi-year investigation by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s office.
This conviction is a stark reminder that voter fraud is a serious crime and that even those in positions of power can be held accountable when caught committing such crimes. It sends a strong message to anyone considering engaging in similar behavior in the future.
