The U.S. Department of Defense says that an Israeli-owned ship struck by missiles launched by Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen was not the intended target.
The US Navy said it tracked two missiles launched from a shore battery in western Yemen towards a merchant vessel in the Red Sea on Tuesday. The ship, registered in Liberia and owned by an Israeli, was struck by one of the missiles but sustained no damage.
The DoD says its assessment is that “the vessel was not the intended target.” It did not specify who the intended target was.
The Houthi rebels have been involved in a civil war with the Yemeni government and its coalition of Arab states since 2015. The conflict has been characterized by indiscriminate attacks by both sides, resulting in frequent casualties.
The United States has provided support to the coalition forces and has frequently condemned the Houthi attacks, including this one. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has called for an end to the conflict and a negotiated settlement.
