OpenAI employees reportedly threatened to quit en masse after former CEO Sam Altman joined Microsoft to head the company’s artificial intelligence research. The news was first reported by technology magazine Wired, which obtained a copy of an email sent to OpenAI staff by Altman. In the email, Altman said that ”
OpenAI is still committed to staying independent and that he would remain involved as co-Chairman. However, the email reportedly caused an uproar among OpenAI’s staff, who worried that Altman’s move to Microsoft could mean that the company would become too closely aligned with the tech giant. Sources close to the matter told Wired that some employees had even planned to leave the company en masse in protest. OpenAI’s staff received assurances from both Altman and the current CEO that this would not be the case, and that OpenAI would continue to work independently.
