The United Automobile Workers (UAW) union announced on Wednesday that its members had officially ratified the agreement reached between the union and the Big Three automakers: General Motors (GM), Ford, and Fiat Chrysler. The four-year contract was approved by 93% of members who voted on the deal.
The contract includes improved wages, job security provisions, and general economic provisions for the workers. It also includes a path for temporary workers to become full-time employees after two years, as well as upgrading the healthcare coverage for part-time and temporary employees. The deal was hailed by UAW leadership as a victory for the nearly 150,000 autoworkers employed by the automakers, many of whom came out in support of the agreement.
The vote is the latest chapter in a long history of union-automaker contracts that have attempted to ensure wages, healthcare, and working conditions for autoworkers. Though the two sides had initially been far apart on some issues, the agreement ultimately proves that both were able to come together to ensure a deal that could satisfy both sides.
