Diageo, the British drinks giant behind Jose Cuervo Tequila, has sought to further distance itself from Sean “Diddy” Combs in the wake of rape accusations against the rap mogul. The company said last week that it has no plans to work with Diddy, who was reportedly in talks to advertise for the tequila brand the rapper already owns a stake in.
In a statement, Diageo said it “takes the allegation of sexual assault seriously” and is “committed to upholding the values of respect, integrity and safety for everyone.” “We have no plans to engage Mr. Combs in connection with the Jose Cuervo brand,” the company added.
The statement follows a report last week in The New York Times that Diddy is the subject of an investigation by Los Angeles prosecutors based on an allegation of rape by a woman who has been identified only as Jane Doe.
Diddy has denied the charges and his lawyer has said the charges are false and “defamatory.”
Diageo had previously been in talks with Diddy to be part of an ad campaign for Jose Cuervo, though the company says the talks were not related to him being an owner of the brand. In 2015, Diddy acquired a majority stake in the DeLeón Tequila brand, which is owned by Diageo.
Diageo’s statement makes it clear that the company is not taking any chances by associating itself with Diddy in light of the rape accusations. The statement reaffirms Diageo’s commitment to fostering a safe and respectful workplace and reassures customers and stakeholders that the company is taking the allegations seriously. It also sends the message that Diageo is unwilling to risk its reputation by working with someone facing such serious charges.
