A federal judge in Montana on Thursday blocked a statewide ban on TikTok from taking effect, extending a string of defeats for legal efforts to restrict the hugely popular short-video app’s use in the United States.
The Town of Whitehall, Montana, had passsed a resolution in October that sought to bar anyone under the age of 18 from downloading or using the app on any municipal-owned device. The resolution also barred city employees from accessing the app on personal devices.
But U.S. District Court Judge Brian Morris ruled that the city’s resolution was likely unconstitutional and that it likely violated federal law.
The decision is the latest in a string of losses for legal efforts both in the United States and abroad to restrict the app’s use. In recent months, similar attempts to restrict TikTok have been struck down in New York, Ohio, and Maryland, among other places.
Several branches of the U.S. military have also barred service members from using the app, citing security concerns. And the Trump administration has sought to ban the app altogether after accusing it of posing a security threat.
However, those efforts have repeatedly been blocked by the courts.
