During the 2008-2009 Gaza conflict, the Obama administration pressed Israel to re-evaluate its strategy “in a more fundamental way” and pursue a sustainable long-term solution to its conflict with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to then-U.S. ambassador to Israel James Cunningham.
At the time, the Obama administration was calling for an immediate cessation of violence between the Israelis and Palestinians, which was eventually achieved. In response, the White House continued to urge for further action.
In a February 2009 cable released by WikiLeaks, Cunningham wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that, “The White House has been clear in urging the parties to consider changes to their approaches that can produce more durable results over the long-term. To the extent that the Israeli government does not move now to reassess its strategy and re-chart its course, long-term damage to Israel’s relations in the region and beyond could be far-reaching.”
In the cable, Cunningham concluded that, while Israel had not yet taken up the offer to reassess its approach, the Obama Administration was continuing to “exert pressure” in order to achieve its desired outcome.
