The landmark climate bill proposed by President Biden includes a lot of investment in clean energy—such as $2 trillion allocated to new clean energy infrastructure, tax credits, and incentives for renewable energy. This funding will help create jobs and reduce emissions.
The funding will disproportionately benefit lower-income areas because many of these areas lack adequate energy access, due to poverty, limited resources, and environmental injustice. Additionally, research has found that those in lower-income communities are disproportionately exposed to air pollution from fossil-fueled power plants and frequently live closest to the proposed renewable energy projects. For example, Biden’s plan includes grants to improve energy storage in low-income communities and funding targeted toward the electrification and installation of insulation in multifamily properties and single-family homes located in low-income neighborhoods.
These investments will help to foster economic and environmental opportunities, while providing a more equitable distribution of clean energy resources.
