We are deeply encouraged by the recent victory of the United Auto Workers (UAW) at the Big Three automakers in the United States. This hard-fought battle not only secures a path to better wages and benefits for the thousands of auto industry workers employed at the Big Three, but also energizes the labor movement as we face continued economic recession and job losses.
This victory has caught the attention of thousands of autoworkers in the United States manufacturing at Toyota, Honda, and other automakers. Many of these workers have been inspired to organize and begin conversations around unionizing in their respective workplaces. In the wake of the UAW victory, workers from more than 20 workplaces in states including Michigan, Mississippi, and Alabama have come forward to organize, and more are signing up to follow suit.
Organizing efforts at non-unionized automakers have long-been an uphill battle. Honda, Toyota, and other automakers formed a lobbying firm in the 2008 to fight unionization at their plants. However, the strong momentum of unioniztaion started by the UAW has bolstered workers’ confidence and belief in the power of collective organizing.
In addition, the UAW has begun actively organizing at Toyota and Honda by engaging in outreach to help workers understand their rights under labor law. Through the UAW’s presence, it is hoped that the foundations of a larger union can take hold and improve working conditions for thousands of autoworkers.
The right to organize is a fundamental right, and we are proud to see autoworkers leading the charge towards an economy that works for all workers.
