President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to pause an upcoming federal trial challenging his immunity from criminal prosecution while his legal team prepares an appeal.
Trump’s attorneys filed a motion on Monday to temporarily delay the case, which is set to begin in January. They argue that they need time to appeal an earlier ruling that denied Trump immunity, as well as to prepare for the trial itself.
The judge on the case is yet to rule on the motion. Should they accept it, the trial would be delayed for several months.
The case focuses on whether or not sitting presidents are immune from criminal prosecution. The suit was brought by a state prosecutor who argued that Trump cannot be shielded from criminal indictment. Trump has argued that the president should be immune from criminal prosecution while in office.
If Trump’s motion is rejected, the trial is set to begin in January.
