Elise Stefanik, a Harvard graduate and a member of the Republican leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives, is becoming the face of the GOP’s charge against elite universities.
In 2018, Stefanik was appointed to House GOP leadership as its youngest ever member, and she has since become a vocal critic of what she perceives as a partisan bias among some faculty members at elite universities, particularly her alma mater.
Stefanik has talked about wanting to allow “more conservative” views to be represented on college campuses, and in response to her criticism, Harvard launched a task force to review its undergraduate education policies. She has also pushed for federal legislation that would require universities to “make sure that there is an equality of viewpoint.”
Despite the criticism from Stefanik, many students and faculty at Harvard have defended the university’s intellectual diversity and academic freedom. They point to the university’s commitment to having a wide range of faculty, staff, and students from different backgrounds and perspectives.
Regardless, Stefanik’s views on higher education — and her rise to the GOP leadership — have not only put her at the center of the party’s charge against elite universities but also highlighted the divide between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of higher education.
