The Hong Kong government has enacted a new law that enables it to offer massive, cash bounties for the arrest or surrender of certain pro-democracy activists. This law was imposed by the Chinese government in an effort to quash dissent in what was once a semi-autonomous region.
The law includes a provision that could allow bounties to be offered for the arrest of foreign citizens, including Americans, if they are deemed to have interfered or undermined China’s interests in Hong Kong.
Critics of the new law have expressed outrage, as they view it as a threat to freedom of expression and a violation of the rights of Hong Kong citizens, and foreign citizens, to peacefully protest.
Foreign governments, including the United States, have voiced their concern over the new law and have called on the Hong Kong government and the Chinese government to repeal it.
