A new report from the respected Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) warns that without an additional boost in funding, tens of millions of low-income parents and young children will be denied assistance with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—often referred to as food stamps—in 2020. The CBPP report notes that current funding levels will not be enough to keep up with population growth and inflation.
According to the report, if Congress does not approve additional funding, up to 20 million SNAP households may no longer qualify for benefits in 2020. This would include households with young children, leaving an estimated 2.2 million young people without assistance. SNAP helps struggling families afford the food they need to stay healthy and active.
The report also highlights the urgent need to reauthorize and improve the child nutrition program. These programs, which provide free or reduced-price meals at school, help ensure that children are getting the nutrition they need to succeed in school and in life.
Congress must act quickly to ensure that tens of millions of families and children have access to the food assistance they need to survive. With hunger increasing in the United States, Congress cannot afford to let this urgent problem slip through the cracks.
