Conservative leaders and supporters are lashing out at President Donald Trump after he attacked Republican Rep. Chip Roy (Texas) on Twitter and called for him to face a primary challenge.
Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to vent his frustration with Rep. Roy, who voted against a popular COVID-19 aid bill in the House.
In a tweet, Trump called Roy a “RINO” (a Republican in name only) and said that he should be challenged in the primary.
In response, conservative pundits and activists expressed their disappointment with the President’s attack. Some accused Trump of not understanding the conservative principles that Roy was trying to defend while others argued that it was wrong for the President to call for a primary challenge.
“Idiotic & unhelpful. GOP needs help unifying & working together to target Biden’s radical policies, not tearing each other down,” tweeted Ari Fleischer, a former press secretary to President George W. Bush.
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt tweeted, “If [Chip] Roy is out, the field for 2024 is almost empty. @realDonaldTrump is wrong. Congressmen should not be ribbent [sic] for an “aye” on bills that don’t meet conservative principles on spending & restraint.”
Many on Twitter also accused Trump of putting his own pettiness above the good of the Republican Party.
In a statement, the House Freedom Caucus affirmed its support for Rep. Roy and said that they are “disappointed the President chose to attack him on Twitter, rather than engaging in constructive dialogue to advance shared goals.”
