Argentina’s foreign affairs minister, Felipe Solá, has announced that Argentina is open to settling contracts in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. During a speech hosted by the Latin American Bitcoin and Blockchain Conference in Buenos Aires on Thursday (July 11, 2019), the foreign affairs minister said, “In Argentina, we are open to tokens and cryptocurrencies.” He added that the country is ready to settle contracts in Bitcoin or other digital assets, in order to reduce transaction costs and improve access to international financial markets. According to the minister, the country’s government is also interested in blockchain technology as a tool to reduce bureaucracy and cut costs. Moreover, Solá suggested that the government could use distributed ledger technology (DLT) to store and facilitate transactions involving public contracts.
