Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani must pay a $138.5 million judgment immediately, a federal judge has ruled. The award is a settlement between Giuliani and Insure RX Solutions, a now-defunct insurance company whose former CEO sued Giuliani’s firm in November 2015. The lawsuit alleged that Giuliani’s law firm had failed to pay attorney’s fees for services rendered and never provided billing invoices.
In a ruling issued Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos found that Giuliani’s law firm owed $145 million from 2013, plus interest that brought the total to $138.5 million. In addition, the judge ordered that Giuliani must pay $9.1 million to the court registry to cover unpaid taxes.
In the ruling, Judge Ramos said that Giuliani’s decision to settle the case was not a “calculated and intelligent” business decision. He ruled that Giuliani must pay the judgment immediately or face a default judgment.
“The court finds that the awarding of summary judgment and imposition of the judgment is the more appropriate and efficient course,” Ramos wrote.
Giuliani was a partner in the now-defunct law firm of Giuliani Partners LLC from February 2001 to May 2013. In June 2015, the firm dissolved and entered into bankruptcy. It is unclear if Giuliani will be able to pay the judgment as his current financial situation is not known.
