1. CZ (Changpeng Zhao): In September 2018, the CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was the victim of a “sim swap” attack. The attacker managed to take control of Zao’s phone number and his SIM card. This allowed them to reset the passwords and authentications of multiple accounts associated with the phone number, including personal and business accounts. Fortunately, CZ acted quickly and contacted his mobile service provider to stop the attack.
2. Michael Terpin: Michael Terpin, a well-known cryptocurrency evangelist, was the victim of a “sim swap” attack in January 2018. The attacker accessed his SIM card and was able to gain control of numerous personal accounts. Terpin sued the mobile service provider (AT&T) for $24 million for failing to protect his personal data.
3. Ian Balina: Ian Balina, a cryptocurrency investor and influencer, was the victim of a “sim swap” attack in April 2019. The attacker manage to gain access to multiple accounts and stole cryptocurrency tokens worth approximately $2 million. Balina is currently suing the mobile service provider (T-Mobile) for failing to protect his accounts and failing to respond appropriately to his reports of suspicious activity.
4. Eric Voorhees: Eric Voorhees, the founder and CEO of ShapeShift, a crypto asset platform, was the victim of a “sim swap” attack in March 2019. The attacker was able to gain access to a number of personal accounts through a ‘port out’ scam. Fortunately, Voorhees was able to restore access to his accounts without significant losses.
