The candidacy of the Russian opposition leader and anti-war activist Ksenia Sobchak has been blocked by the country’s electoral commission, preventing her from running against President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming presidential elections. The decision to deny Sobchak the right to participate in the March 2018 vote came as no surprise given that her anti-war rhetoric and critical approach to the Putin administration have been considered “dangerous” by many in the Kremlin. Sobchak has refused to campaign against Putin, but instead has chosen to stand as an “against all” candidate, calling on citizens to reject his “authoritarianism.” Despite this, she has been consistently blocked from entering the race and remains the most high-profile voter not allowed to participate.
