On June 19, 2020, Iranian leaders accused Israel of carrying out a missile strike on Iran’s Khuzestan province that killed a senior member of the Revolutionary Guards, according to the Independent. Brigadier General Hossein Pourjafari was reportedly killed in the Israeli strike, which some Iranian officials also linked to a massive explosion heard earlier in the day in the region. Hossein Salami, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), vowed to “avenge” Pourjafari’s death.
The Israeli strike represented the latest in a series of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. In recent months, Israel has repeatedly accused Iran of attempting to expand its influence in the region by conducting airstrikes inside Syria and Iraq, and supplying weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon. It is believed that the Israeli airstrike was meant as a warning to Iran, sending a message that any further attempts to expand inside the region would not be tolerated.
