On August 14, 2020, the Japanese automotive giant, Toyota Motor Corp., announced that it was recalling over 120,000 cars in Japan, the United States, and Canada due to a potential defect in the left side doors. The recall affects a number of Toyota and Lexus models, including the Prius, Corolla, and the Lexus GS300. The recalled vehicles may have an issue with the power window switch, which could cause the door to open in the event of a crash.
Toyota said it was aware of 31 instances of doors opening in collisions or sudden decelerations in the recalled cars. The potential defect was discovered during internal testing and is thought to be a problem with the window switch assembly.
Toyota instructed customers to bring their affected vehicles to a dealership where technicians will inspect and replace the left-side power window switch. The repairs will be performed at no cost to the customer. If the switch is not replaced, there is a possibility the door could open in a crash, potentially causing injury or death.
To date, no accidents or injuries have been reported from the defect.
