Maersk has suspended Red Sea shipping until further notice after a Houthi militant attack on one of its vessels. The threatened area was in international waters when the attack occurred, causing an oil leak from the vessel. All personnel are safe and accounted for, and the vessel is stable.
In response to the attack, Maersk has declared force majeure in certain ports along the Red Sea, suspending shipping there until further notice. “As a precautionary measure, we have decided to declare Force Majeure in certain ports along the Red Sea as of today,” a spokesman for Maersk said. “Our immediate priority is to ensure the safety of our personnel and vessels.”
In addition, other shipping companies, including regional leader Ancient Navigator, have announced that they are suspending operations in the Red Sea until further notice. According to the company, “Safety is paramount in our minds and until we can guarantee its level at all times we will not be intending to operate in the Red Sea.”
The attacks have sparked fears of increasing regional conflict and a weakening of security along major international trade routes. This could have a severe economic impact, as the Red Sea is a critical route for international trade and energy shipments.
