Under the leadership of President Trump, Republican candidates have taken starkly polarizing stances on issues of history and race. Trump has often blamed problems on people of color and immigrants, leading some Republican candidates to follow in his footsteps, voicing unfounded accusations such as blaming African Americans for inner-city crime and calling for an end to affirmative action programs. Other candidates have adopted a less inflammatory approach, promoting a law-and-order platform that focuses on equality of opportunity rather than race.
At the same time, Republican candidates have increasingly cast doubt on the accuracy of history, particularly the impact of racism and colonialism on American institutions. Only a few Republicans have made the effort to acknowledge the historic impact of racism in America and the part it has played in creating a legacy of inequality.
However, despite the obvious divide among Republican candidates on this issue, their views reflect those of President Trump in one aspect: These candidates largely disregard the importance of acknowledging our nation’s past and the role that racism and inequality have had in shaping our present. Such polarizing stances on the issues of race and history will undoubtedly have long-term implications for our nation.
